California Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are selling their Sacramento-area home for $7.5 million, but the governor has stated he was largely unaware of one of its most notable features: a 5,000-bottle wine cellar.

During a press conference, Newsom expressed surprise when questioned about the cellar's capacity, stating, “Are you serious? Really?” He added that he never filled it and “didn’t even know I had that much.” The governor claimed he only learned about the cellar's size from news reports.

Newsom further asserted that he used the space for books, referring to them as his “only inheritance” from his father, former judge and Gordon Getty associate William Newsom. Photos of the cellar show rows of shelves designed for wine bottles, with books also appearing to be stacked within the space.

The couple listed the 12,000-square-foot home in Fair Oaks, California, for $7.5 million on Tuesday, having purchased it eight years prior for half that price. The property also includes a wellness oasis, a resort-style pool, a tennis court, and a private casita.

Newsom is reportedly preparing for a potential White House run. The couple acquired a $9 million home in Marin County in 2024. According to released tax returns, the Newsoms' annual income between 2022 and 2024 ranged from $1.7 million to $2 million, partly derived from Newsom's investments in a wine and hospitality business linked to the Getty family. The family's finances have previously faced scrutiny amid an investigation into federal law enforcement, which Newsom characterized as a political maneuver.
