Tottenham have provided a health update on former captain Gary Mabbutt, stating he is recovering well after a serious accident in South Africa. The 64-year-old required treatment for a significant blood clot in his calf following a fall.

Former Spurs teammate Micky Hazard initially shared the news on Facebook, reporting that Mabbutt was in hospital awaiting treatment and was not permitted to fly home until at least July 24. The incident occurred shortly before England's World Cup semi-final match.

Mabbutt is currently resting at his family home in Johannesburg and awaiting medical clearance to return to the UK. Despite the injury, the club noted that he was making daily birthday calls to elderly supporters.

Mabbutt, who earned 16 caps for England, has a history of health conditions. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 17 and has previously spoken about having reduced feeling in his feet due to the condition and playing injuries. He also underwent major heart surgery in 2017.

Mabbutt made 601 appearances for Tottenham as a versatile defender before retiring in 1998.
