A wildfire, known as the Gann Fire, has rapidly grown to over 3,700 acres in Calaveras County, California, forcing widespread evacuations and the declaration of a local state of emergency. The blaze began Monday evening near Hogan Dam Road and Gann Road, close to Hogan Lake.

By Tuesday morning, the fire had expanded from an initial 30 acres to approximately 3,000 acres, with zero percent containment reported. Firefighting crews are contending with hot temperatures and steep terrain as they work to control the fast-moving flames, which are burning northeast of Copperopolis and west of Pool Station Road. Fuel, topography, and light winds are contributing factors to the fire's spread.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department proclaimed a local state of emergency due to the ongoing impacts of the fire. As of 3:30 p.m. on August 4, 2026, the Gann Fire had reached an estimated 3,759 acres, necessitating a significant coordinated response from local, state, and regional partners. Night-flying helicopters were deployed Monday night to assist ground crews in slowing the fire's dangerous rate of spread.

Evacuation orders have been issued for specific zones, including CCU-109, CCU-110, CCU-130-B, CCU-139, CCU-140, and CCU-147. Warnings have been issued for areas CCU-111, CCU-131, CCU-148, and CCU-153. Evacuation shelters have been established at the Valley Springs Veterans Memorial, and the Calaveras County Fairgrounds is available for residents needing to bring their pets.
