GameStop announced it will reopen select stores nationwide starting September 11, as company insiders have made significant new investments in the retailer's stock. The company shared the news via social media, indicating a phased return for some previously closed locations.
A spokesperson confirmed that at least one store, located in Brooklyn, Ohio, was part of the initial reopening, with a broader list of locations yet to be disclosed. This move follows a period of extensive store closures and cost-cutting measures undertaken by GameStop in recent years to streamline operations.
Insider Investments Signal Confidence
The store reopenings coincide with substantial stock purchases by key company figures. On September 10, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen acquired 1 million shares of Class A common stock at an average price of approximately $20.38 per share, a transaction valued at roughly $20.4 million. Separately, GameStop board member Alain Attal purchased 5,000 shares for about $100,000 on the same day.
Shifting Sales Landscape
GameStop's business strategy has increasingly focused on collectibles, with these items now representing a larger portion of the company's net sales. In the most recent fiscal quarter, collectibles accounted for 45.1% of net sales, a notable increase from approximately 29% in fiscal year 2025. Collectibles sales alone saw a 57% rise compared to the same quarter in the previous year.
