More than 120,000 Galanz Retro Refrigerators sold at Home Depot and Amazon have been recalled due to an electrical fault that can cause the appliances to short circuit and catch fire, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced. Officials are aware of 34 reported fires linked to the refrigerators, including one that resulted in a fatality.

Consumers are advised to immediately unplug and stop using the recalled refrigerators until they can be repaired. The affected appliances were sold nationwide between January 2019 and September 2022 for prices ranging from $330 to $520.

The recall specifically impacts Galanz's retro-style refrigerators, available in black, blue, red, and white, with a 7.6 cubic foot capacity. These units measure approximately 58 inches in height, 24 inches in depth, and 21 inches in width, featuring a top freezer compartment and adjustable glass shelves. Only refrigerators manufactured between December 2018 and December 2020 are included in this recall.

Model numbers affected by the recall are BCD-215V-62H, GLR76TRDER, GLR76TBKER, GLR76TBEER, and GLR76TWEER. Owners can verify if their refrigerator is part of the recall by checking a white label located on the upper left-hand corner of the back of the unit. This label displays the model number and a six-digit date code in YYYYMM format.

The CPSC states that the refrigerators' internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite, posing a significant risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards. The refrigerators were manufactured in China by Zhongshan Galanz and imported into the U.S. by Galanz Americas and Home Depot.

Galanz Americas is offering a free in-home repair by a qualified technician for owners of the recalled models. Consumers can contact Galanz Americas by phone at 888-462-0579, by email at [email protected], or through the company's product recall website. The recall was announced on July 30, 2026, under CPSC Recall No. 26-649.

This recall occurs amid increased scrutiny of household appliances following a series of high-profile safety alerts. In June, over a million power banks were recalled due to potential overheating and fire risks from their lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, various ranges of air fryers, pressure cookers, and electric ranges have been removed from sale in recent years because of fire or burn hazards.
