Gal Gadot, who has portrayed Wonder Woman for nearly a decade, has stated that she has not had recent discussions about returning as the iconic superhero in James Gunn's revamped DC Universe.
Gadot's tenure as Wonder Woman began with her appearance in 2016's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." She went on to star in two "Wonder Woman" films and appeared in "Justice League" and other DC projects. With Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios and initiating a reboot of the franchise, the possibility of Gadot's Diana Prince continuing in the new DCU remained a subject of speculation.
In a recent interview, Gadot clarified that there have been "any specific conversations" about her return. The last significant discussion about developing a third "Wonder Woman" film, she noted, occurred when the studio expressed interest in the project. Since then, she has "heard nothing."
While not an official farewell, Gadot expressed her well wishes for whoever eventually takes on the role of Wonder Woman. "This is such an incredible character that so many of us care about so much, so whoever it’s going to be to portray her, I wish for her that she enjoys this amazing ride with this amazing character," Gadot said. She also expressed gratitude for her time playing the character, stating, "And I’m just grateful that I was granted the opportunity to wear her boots and celebrate this incredible character and everything she stands for."
Gadot's most recent appearances as Wonder Woman were in "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" and "The Flash," films that marked the winding down of the previous DC cinematic universe. Her cameo in "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" had fueled some fan speculation about a potential place for her in the future DCU, particularly after the post-credits scene featured characters from "Peacemaker." However, James Gunn later clarified that the scene was not considered canon.
James Gunn had previously stated that a new Wonder Woman had not been cast, but concrete details regarding Gadot's potential involvement had been scarce. The development of a new "Wonder Woman" film is ongoing, with Ana Nogueira attached to write the script. Nogueira is also involved in the broader creative direction of the new DCU.
Fan speculation has also considered possibilities for Gadot to appear in the new DCU in a different role, similar to Jason Momoa's transition from Aquaman to Lobo. Gadot has been fan-cast in roles such as Big Barda, Talia al Ghul, and Poison Ivy. However, there is currently no indication that these possibilities are being pursued.
In addition to her DC work, Gadot has been involved in other projects, including Disney's live-action "Snow White," Netflix's "Heart of Stone," and her upcoming Prime Video thriller "The Runner."
