FX is set to premiere "The Shards," a new series adapted from Bret Easton Ellis's novel of the same name. The show offers a semi-autobiographical depiction of Ellis's experiences in early 1980s Los Angeles, focusing on his life and interactions at a prestigious prep school.
The narrative centers on a fictionalized version of the author, played by Igby Rigney, who dreams of becoming a writer but harbors insecurities about his future. His world is disrupted by the arrival of Robert, a charismatic new student portrayed by Homer Gere, the son of actor Richard Gere. Robert quickly ascends to popularity within the school, leading Bret to suspect he may be "The Trawler," an unidentified criminal targeting girls in the city.
The series aims to blend Ryan Murphy's signature style with the distinct aesthetic of the 1980s. The ensemble cast includes Graham Campbell as Thom Wright, a seemingly perfect and popular high school student whose life is threatened by Robert's arrival. Kaia Gerber, daughter of Cindy Crawford, plays Susan Reynolds, the school's most popular cheerleader, whose idyllic existence is also impacted by Robert.
Hayes Warner, known for her music career, makes her acting debut as Debbie Schaffer, Susan's best friend who feels constrained by her relationship with Bret and her bond with Susan. Debbie embarks on a personal journey to find independence. Wes Bentley stars as Terry Schaffer, Debbie's father, an imposing Hollywood movie producer.
Evan Rachel Wood portrays Liz Schaffer, Terry's wife and Debbie's mother, a woman who once aspired to fame and now navigates a difficult life, often in conflict with her husband and daughter. Jordan Roth, a Tony-nominated Broadway producer, makes his acting debut as Steven Reinhardt, Terry's discreet assistant who observes the secrets within Los Angeles's elite circles.
