U.S. Marshals are seeking Khadfi Fleming, 19, who is wanted for robbery and is a person of interest in the aggravated assault of an off-duty Philadelphia police officer that occurred early Monday. The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a cash reward for information leading to Fleming's whereabouts.
The confrontation unfolded when thieves allegedly targeted the off-duty officer's Dodge Charger. The officer pursued the suspects, resulting in an exchange of gunfire, though no injuries were reported. The suspects escaped, and authorities later recovered the damaged Charger along with numerous 9mm shell casings. Investigators believe the suspects fled in another stolen vehicle, a Lexus that was later found abandoned.
Fleming has not been charged in connection with the Monday incident, but authorities were already searching for him prior to this latest violence. He is wanted on a robbery charge connected to the June killing of Billy Schmidt, a 22-year-old Penn State student. Schmidt was shot and killed on June 6 while walking home from an NBA Finals watch party.
Surveillance footage captured the moments before Schmidt's death, showing him asking for his stolen phone back before a gunshot was heard. Schmidt was a digital journalism and media student expected to graduate in December.
The killing of Schmidt led to a search for two 16-year-old suspects. U.S. Marshals apprehended Azzubair Outen-Fleming, 16, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, approximately one month after the incident. Authorities stated that Outen-Fleming would face a murder charge. The second teen suspect, Kaiseem Smith, surrendered to Philadelphia police.
Anyone with information regarding Khadfi Fleming's location is encouraged to contact the U.S. Marshals Service at 1-866-865-TIPS (8477).
