Jasen Esposito, a former offensive lineman for the Buffalo Bills, has recounted how he became pop superstar Taylor Swift's first bodyguard. Esposito, who played in the NFL before the singer's rise to global fame, shared the anecdote on Ross Tucker's podcast this week.
Esposito's entry into music industry security began in 2005 when his professional football career concluded. He received a call from Scott Swift, Taylor Swift's father, inquiring about his availability for an upcoming Saturday afternoon. Scott Swift asked Esposito to provide security for Taylor Swift during an autograph signing event, which Esposito recalled was for a local country music station.
Accepting the impromptu assignment, Esposito stated he "stood next to Taylor the whole time." He explained that the decision to hire a "big intimidating guy" stemmed from a previous incident where someone had attempted to hug the then-young artist. Scott Swift immediately thought of Esposito for the role.
According to Esposito, Swift's first tour bus was present at the event, and she performed several songs for the attendees. He also mentioned working another of Swift's engagements in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 300 pounds, Esposito's physical presence was considered ideal for the role. He had gone undrafted out of Kutztown University, eventually signing with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent before spending two years on the Bills' practice squad.
Scott Swift played a significant role in his daughter's early career, arranging performances and appearances, and submitting demo tapes. Taylor Swift's debut album was released in 2006 when she was 16 years old.
During her early career, Swift frequently performed at fairs and visited local country radio stations nationwide to build her fanbase. As her popularity grew, the need for security escalated, leading to the eventual hiring of additional bodyguards over the years. Swift has since become one of the most prominent artists of her generation, achieving numerous accolades, including 14 Grammy Awards.
