The Fresno Chaffee Zoo celebrated the Fourth of July with an unexpected arrival: two African lion cubs born to lioness Zamaya. The births mark the second litter for Zamaya and male lion Chisulo, whose first litter of cubs, Taraj and Asali, were born in 2024 and remain at the zoo.
The zoo's General Curator, Nicole Presley, confirmed the births, stating that Zamaya is recovering well and performing her maternal duties. "Fresno Chaffee Zoo is excited to expand our lion pride with the addition of two new cubs," Presley said. "Zamaya is doing a great job, as expected, and is recovering well."
Both mother and cubs are currently behind the scenes and will remain so until they have received all necessary vaccinations and are ready to be introduced to the public and the rest of the zoo's lion pride. Zookeepers are monitoring the newborns closely and will share updates via social media and the zoo's website.
The arrival of the cubs is a significant development for the African lion population, which is listed as 'vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List. The Fresno Chaffee Zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) Species Survival Plan and Saving Animals From Extinction program, contributing to conservation efforts for this species. The new cubs will eventually join the zoo's African Adventure exhibit, a 13-acre habitat designed to replicate natural environments for lions and other African wildlife.
