Fresno’s ABC30 has experienced a significant staff turnover in its on-air talent, with morning meteorologist Christine Gregory announcing her departure, marking the fourth staffer to leave the Disney-owned station in three months. Gregory’s last day was Friday, concluding nearly three years delivering morning weather reports.
In an on-air announcement, Gregory described her decision as "incredibly difficult," stating she had to "make a choice" between her career and personal life, with her "heart" leading her to prioritize the latter. She is relocating to Buffalo, New York, to be closer to family and to settle into a new home with her boyfriend. Gregory, who was born and raised in Syracuse, began her broadcasting career in Rochester before moving to Fresno in 2023.
Her colleagues expressed sadness over her departure. Anchor Jessica Harrington referred to Gregory as "sunshine in human form," and fellow anchor Cory James characterized the recent back-to-back departures as a "double whammy."
This exodus follows the recent departures of other on-air personalities. Last month, reporter and weather anchor Tiffany Olin left ABC30 for KVVU-TV in Las Vegas, where she now anchors weekday weathercasts. In mid-July, city hall reporter Gabe Ferris moved to ABC7 in Chicago as a general assignment reporter. In June, longtime sports director and anchor Stephen Hicks signed off after eight years with ABC30, relocating to Southern California to join his wife, television journalist Hunter Sowards.
The turnover is not unique to ABC30. KMPH anchor Kim Stephens recently left her position after 23 years to take a full-time, tenure-track role in the Media, Communications and Journalism Department at Fresno State University.
Viewers have expressed dismay over the frequent departures, with one social media user likening the situation to "the break-up of the Beatles."
Industry observers note that such turnover is not uncommon in local television news, as contracts typically run for two to three years. Fresno has experienced similar patterns of staff changes in 2019 and again between 2022 and 2023.
