Freeform's annual "31 Days of Halloween" programming event begins today, October 1, with the premiere of the new series "Coven Academy." The show, created by Tim Federle, will debut with four back-to-back episodes starting at 8 p.m. ET. Initially planned for the Disney Channel, "Coven Academy" will now be available on Freeform.
The series follows three teenage witches in training tasked with protecting their city from ancient, dangerous forces. The narrative also delves into their personal lives, exploring the complexities of growing up, forming bonds, and navigating rivalries.
Maliana Weissman stars as one of the lead witches, alongside Ora Duplass and newcomer Jordan Leftwich. In an interview with DECIDER, Duplass described the core trio as having a natural chemistry that complemented their on-screen dynamic. "Casting was long to try and find these three characters," she said. "So we didn’t have to try hard to click, as well, because that magic was already kind of there."
The cast also includes Tiffani Thiessen, known for "Saved by the Bell," and Malachi Barton, from the "Zombies" franchise. Devon Sawa, who starred in "Casper," plays Mr. Cole. Sawa commented on working with younger actors, noting that it made him more conscious of his behavior and his role as a positive example.
"Coven Academy" is available to watch live on Freeform through a cable subscription or a live TV streaming service. DIRECTV offers a five-day free trial for new subscribers. For those who prefer to stream on-demand, the entire series will be available on Disney+ the following day. Disney+ offers subscription tiers starting at $12.49 per month with ads and $21.49 per month without ads.
Freeform will air new episodes of "Coven Academy" weekly. The initial four episodes premiere on October 1, with subsequent episodes airing on October 8 and October 15. The series features an ensemble cast including Malina Weissman as Briar, Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Graves, Malachi Barton as Jake, Louis Thresher as Ollie, Jordan Leftwich as Sasha, Ora Duplass as Tegan, Brendon Tremblay as Alexander, Swayam Bhatia as McKenna, Keegan Connor Tracy as Tamora, BJ Harrison as Agnes, Nathaniel Logan McIntyre as Teese, and Devon Sawa as Mr. Cole.
