Four individuals died while attempting to cross the English Channel in small boats on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, according to French officials. The incidents occurred in two separate events off France's northern coast.
In the first incident, a boat capsized near Hardelot around 11:30 p.m. local time Wednesday. A man, believed to be in his thirties or forties, died. Six others, including a one-year-old child, sustained minor injuries. Officials described the vessel as a "taxi" boat, which cruises the coast to pick up paying customers already in the water. Authorities "neutralized" the boat, and an investigation has been initiated.
The second incident involved a boat that departed from the Dunkirk area overnight. The French coastguard spotted the vessel near a breakwater around 6:00 a.m. Thursday. Search and rescue teams found three unconscious individuals aboard. Emergency medical personnel later confirmed their deaths.
Several hundred people successfully crossed the Channel into the United Kingdom on Wednesday. A UK government spokesperson commented on the incidents, stating that "Every death in the Channel is a tragedy and a stark reminder of the dangers posed by criminal gangs exploiting vulnerable people for profit."
