A former Texas high school teacher, Holly Adams, was arrested Tuesday facing charges of tampering with evidence and purchasing or furnishing alcohol to a minor. The arrests stem from an investigation into alleged inappropriate relationships with students that began nearly a year ago.

Adams, who previously taught at Angleton High School near Houston, was taken into custody by the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation was initiated after a student reported to school staff that Adams was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a former student. According to reports, the student told officials that the former student had FaceTime-called him from Adams’ home, and that nude photos of Adams were found in the bedroom.

Another image reportedly showed Adams and the former student in an embrace. Authorities also allege that Adams invited students to her home to perform chores and admitted to communicating with members of the school's baseball team via Snapchat.

Adams was booked into the Brazoria County Detention Center and subsequently released on a $26,000 bond. A spokesperson confirmed that she is no longer employed by the Angleton Independent School District.

Experts note that adults who engage in such relationships may rationalize their behavior. Dr. Gail Saltz, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College, explained that individuals engaging in relationships with younger people sometimes engage in “self-grooming,” convincing themselves the relationship is legitimate and even beneficial to the victim. She emphasized that the psychological damage to male students from such abuse is comparable to that experienced by female victims, as it involves a profound violation of trust by an authority figure.
