Lagerald Vick, a former University of Kansas basketball player and national champion, has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. The charges stem from an incident on July 4 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Vick, 29, was arrested Saturday and is being held on $1.5 million bond. According to a police affidavit, the alleged victim, Carlos Funzie, stated he was at a party when he was confronted by a man. Funzie reported that he attempted to deescalate the situation by turning away, at which point he was shot in the back. The suspect then fled the scene.

Funzie was transported to a hospital by private vehicle. Police state that Funzie provided the suspect's first name and later identified Vick from a six-person photographic lineup.

College Career

Vick enrolled at Kansas in 2015 and was part of the team that won the national championship as a freshman in 2016. He played for the Jayhawks until February 2019, when he left the program to pursue a professional career overseas. During his senior season, Vick averaged 14.1 points per game and set a school record with eight made three-pointers in a single game without a miss. He also helped the team achieve third, fourth, and 19th place finishes in subsequent years.

Professional Career

Following his departure from Kansas, Vick played professionally in various international leagues, including Taiwan, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay, and New Zealand. He reportedly stepped away from the game in 2024.

Vick does not have a listed attorney and is scheduled for a bail review hearing on Tuesday at 9 a.m. local time.
