Former Kansas men's basketball player Lagerald Vick has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and using a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. The charges stem from an alleged incident on July 5.
Vick was arrested by Memphis police on Saturday and booked into Shelby County Jail, where his bond was set at $1.5 million. According to The Kansas City Star, he is due in court on Monday for arraignment and on Tuesday for a bail review hearing.
The victim told police that he was at a party on July 4 when a verbal confrontation occurred with an individual. The victim stated that the man fired a shot as he turned to run away, striking him in the back. The victim was transported to Regional One Hospital by private vehicle. Investigators identified Vick as the suspect after the victim provided the shooter's first name, and Vick was later identified in a photo lineup.
This is not Vick's first encounter with the legal system this year. He previously faced two felony charges and a misdemeanor in connection with an incident that included aggravated burglary, theft of property, and vandalism. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 30 for that case.
During his freshman year at Kansas in 2015, a Title IX investigation found that Vick had likely assaulted a female student. He was accused of punching her multiple times in the arm and kicking her in the face.
Vick played for the Jayhawks from 2015 to 2019, starting 41 games and appearing in 94 contests. He averaged 14.1 points per game in his senior year before leaving the team in early February.
