Steven, who experienced food insecurity after graduating, is now working to destigmatize food bank use and empower clients.

Following his graduation, Steven faced financial difficulties and utilized a food bank. He found it challenging to seek assistance initially but emphasized the importance of reframing feelings of shame associated with visiting food banks. He described his experience at the Taff Ely food bank as "uplifting" due to the welcoming environment.

"I was like, this is a victory," Steven stated, "I'm strong, I'm not weak. I'm courageous."

Steven now volunteers with the lived experience group at the Taff Ely food bank and supports other charitable organizations. The group's feedback has prompted changes at the food bank, including no longer marking carrier bags to conceal their origin and offering visitors the opportunity to select their own food items.

"It gives people a bit more independence and autonomy," he said. "They can pick their own items, they can trade one thing for another, there's still a certain allowance but it saves food waste."
