A 70-year-old woman opened fire inside the Port Orange Police Department lobby on Thursday morning, according to Police Chief Manuel Marino. The incident, which occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time, resulted in an officer-involved shooting, and the suspect was hospitalized.
Marino stated that the woman entered the department's main lobby carrying a handgun. She then engaged with civilian staff at the records section, brandishing the firearm. After a few minutes, she discharged the weapon inside the lobby in the direction of the staff members.
Responding officers arrived quickly after a call reporting a shooting in progress. The woman exited the lobby and was confronted by the officers. She was still holding her firearm when officers encountered her.
No officers or civilian employees sustained any injuries during the incident. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The woman's condition and identity are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
