Billy Allison, 36, a founding member of the Raise the Colours campaign group, has denied the murder of pub owner Matthew O'Gara and a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent. Allison appeared via video link at Stafford Crown Court on September 1, 2026, to enter his plea.
Police were called to the Ricco & Loren bar in Lichfield, Staffordshire, at approximately 11:25 p.m. on May 24, following reports of an assault involving two men. Mr. O'Gara, the owner of The Plough pub in Huddlesford, sustained serious injuries and died in hospital on Tuesday. The second victim, Adam Cooper, was taken to the hospital but has since been discharged.
Raise the Colours is described as a grassroots movement originating in south Birmingham that aims to place English and British flags on lampposts across the country.
Judge Avik Mukherjee remanded Allison into custody, warning that the trial would proceed in his absence if he failed to attend. A 10-day trial has been scheduled for October 28.
Following Mr. O'Gara's death, The Plough pub posted on Facebook announcing its closure for a few days to allow staff and family privacy and respect. Lichfield Rugby Club also paid tribute to Mr. O'Gara, describing him as a "very generous and valued sponsor" and a friend.
