Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., has sharply criticized what he described as an "orgy of socialism" taking hold of the Democratic Party, particularly following recent primary election outcomes.
In an interview with The Post, Fetterman singled out candidates who have embraced socialist platforms, labeling them as "deeply disturbed individuals." He specifically referenced Darializa Avila Chevalier, who defeated incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in a New York primary. Fetterman noted Chevalier's past statements, including calling America a "disgrace" and expressing controversial views on immigration and law enforcement.
"These recent elections vindicate my description," Fetterman stated, referring to his earlier comments about the party's ideological direction. He also mentioned other Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidates who secured primary victories in New York, suggesting a broader trend within the party.
Fetterman, who was elected in a key battleground state in 2022, has positioned himself as an independent voice within the Democratic Party. He has previously supported some bipartisan measures, including backing President Trump on an Iran War Powers resolution, an action that reportedly caused friction at a closed-door luncheon.
Despite his critiques, Fetterman indicated he has no immediate plans to leave the Democratic Party, though he did not completely rule out the possibility of changing his party affiliation in the future. "Even if I changed my party, my votes or views wouldn’t change," he told The Post.
Fetterman's own political standing in Pennsylvania has seen mixed reviews. A recent poll showed his favorability rating at 24 percent, significantly lower than that of traditional Democrat Gov. Josh Shapiro, who garnered a 62 percent favorable rating. The senator's willingness to sometimes diverge from prevailing party views has been noted as a factor affecting his popularity.
Meanwhile, progressive candidates continue to make inroads. In Philadelphia, self-described democratic socialist Chris Rabb won a House Democratic primary. Rabb has been mentioned as a potential challenger to Fetterman in the 2028 election.
The New York primary results saw DSA-backed candidates prevail in several races. State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez won the primary to succeed Rep. Nydia Velazquez in the 7th District, and Brad Lander secured a victory in the 10th District. These deep blue districts are expected to send these newly elected representatives to Washington.
