Democratic Senator John Fetterman addressed the Republican midterm convention via video on Wednesday, a move that has amplified existing concerns among Democrats about his party loyalty.
The address, delivered to a two-day rally in Dallas, featured Fetterman introducing fellow Pennsylvania Senator and Republican Dave McCormick, whom Fetterman referred to as "a great American."
In his brief remarks, Fetterman, standing in front of a steel mill, stated, "I'm always going to stand with America. I'm always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life." He added that he "will work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life."
Fetterman's appearance is likely to intensify fears of a potential party switch. Such a move could significantly impact the balance of power in the Senate, where Democrats aim to regain the majority. Losing Fetterman would require Democrats to secure an additional seat to achieve control.
In recent times, Fetterman has appeared increasingly detached from his party's mainstream. He has consistently supported Israel's actions in Gaza and has criticized left-wing candidates associated with the Democratic Socialists of America. His voting record has also shown divergence, including support for Republican-backed measures to end government shutdowns, backing several of President Donald Trump's nominees, and opposing efforts to end the war in Iran.
Despite these instances, Fetterman has maintained that he does not intend to switch parties, citing his support for labor unions, LGBTQ rights, and other progressive causes.
McCormick, following Fetterman's video, expressed gratitude for his "friendship" and "courage." The video was subsequently shared on a White House social media account with the caption "Based John Fetterman."
