Chelley Tulloch, a former RAF medic, described her struggles with PTSD following multiple deployments, experiencing nightmares, self-doubt, and altered perceptions. "I just went through a lot of low moods, nightmares, seeing things, hearing things, smelling things, doubting myself, not being able to do things that I could do," Tulloch stated, noting the profound impact these experiences had on her cognitive functions. "It really does affect the way your brain thinks."
Tulloch's experience highlights a growing need for dedicated mental health support for women in the armed forces, a demographic increasingly joining military ranks. She has connected with other female veterans across Scotland and Wales, observing a collaborative effort among various organizations aimed at supporting them. "There's all sorts of different organisations out there now for the female veterans, and we are all pulling together," she said.
This initiative has already seen significant positive outcomes, with Tulloch being one of 48 female veterans who have benefited from the group's assistance. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has acknowledged the increasing number of women in the armed forces and stated its commitment to improving mental health support. A spokesperson confirmed that since 2024, the MOD has implemented substantial changes to enhance these services for both current personnel and veterans.
"We owe a debt of gratitude to all those who serve, and since 2024, we have made significant changes to improve mental health support for personnel and veterans – including for the growing number of women in our armed forces," the MOD spokesperson said. They added that serving personnel have access to a 24-hour helpline and can connect with mental health professionals.
Tulloch's journey, supported by these networks, underscores the vital role that peer support and accessible mental health services play in the recovery and well-being of female veterans. The expanding network aims to ensure that more women who have served receive the tailored care they need.
