The Trump Justice Department's Civil Rights Division is actively investigating crimes fueled by antisemitism in New York City and has sent a letter to Mayor Zohran Mamdani seeking answers regarding the "unequal treatment" of Jewish residents.

The department stated in a press release that it is "actively investigating and prosecuting hate crimes, including antisemitism, in New York City and nationwide," and has an "extensive and active portfolio of antisemitism enforcement."

This development follows recent antisemitic incidents, including a stabbing on the Upper West Side where the assailant reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar." While not explicitly tied to the mayor by law enforcement, some Jewish leaders have linked the incidents to Mamdani's criticism of Israel. Hate crimes have reportedly increased in New York City, with over half of this year's incidents targeting Jewish New Yorkers, according to NYPD statistics.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, met with Dov Hikind, founder of Americans Against Antisemitism, to discuss complaints about local hate crimes. Hikind stated that Dhillon informed him of the letter sent to Mayor Mamdani requesting a response to the "unequal treatment" of Jews in the city.

Jonathan Greeenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, suggested that Mamdani's rhetoric concerning Israel could be contributing to violence, pointing to a social media post by an individual arrested for an attack on a synagogue in Florida that reportedly demonized the Jewish state. Greeenblatt asserted that "words have consequences" and that "inflammatory rhetoric can lead to violence."

Mamdani's office has not yet responded to requests for comment. The mayor has previously stated his commitment to addressing antisemitism and has reportedly increased funding for hate crime prevention initiatives.
