The family of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Mississippi resident, is seeking clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding his death after a boating trip.

Wells disappeared on July 4th while on a trip with friends to Horn Island, an undeveloped barrier island off the Mississippi coast. His body was discovered in the water two days later, on July 6th. The Jackson County Sheriff's office initially stated that no foul play was suspected but has appealed to the public for any information.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump has been retained by Wells' family. Crump stated that there are conflicting witness accounts and that the family has ordered an independent autopsy. An initial autopsy was performed earlier this week, but the results have not yet been made public. The Jackson County coroner confirmed the identity of the body through dental records.

Christine Wonsley, Wells' mother, raised the alarm when her son did not return on the evening of July 4th. Wells, a student at Southwest Mississippi Community College and a member of the American football team, was described by his coach as a cheerful individual. A search effort involving multiple local, state, and federal agencies was launched following his disappearance.

Horn Island is described by the National Park Service as having no amenities, including staff, drinking water, shelter, or communication services.

Crump has expressed the family's concerns about unanswered questions regarding how Wells became separated from his friends and the events leading to his death. The family reportedly does not believe Wells would have chosen to remain on the island alone, citing his character.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has requested that anyone who was on or near Horn Island on July 4th come forward. They are also seeking original, unedited photos and videos related to the incident, particularly those depicting alleged altercations or showing Wells.
