Falcons QB Situation Unclear as Injuries Cloud Week 2 Plans

Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski stated Wednesday that he is "not ruling anybody out" regarding the team's quarterback situation for their upcoming Week 2 game against the Carolina Panthers. The uncertainty stems from injuries impacting key players.

Cooper Rush, who took over for an injured Tua Tagovailoa in the Falcons' season-opening 20-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, participated fully in practice. However, Rush had been dealing with back spasms that flared up four days prior. In the Week 1 game, Rush completed 143 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

Tagovailoa sustained an oblique injury in practice shortly before the Falcons' season opener. He was initially ruled out for the game and remains listed as day-to-day. He had not yet participated in practice as of Wednesday.

"Of course, ideal world, I think everybody, every team, you'd love to know who's playing at every position," Stefanski told reporters. "That's a no-brainer. I get that part. But we're going to be flexible and make sure that we're giving all of our guys the ability to go play and play well."

Michael Penix Jr., a 2024 first-round pick, is also in consideration. Penix played in nine of the Falcons' first 10 games last season before suffering an ACL tear. He has since been medically cleared but recently expressed a desire to feel closer to full strength before returning to action this season.

"I had that conversation and I just told [coach Stefanski], 'I'm not where I want to be right now,'" Penix said earlier this month. "I want to be able to be 100 percent so I can help this team win football games. And I'm really close."

Undrafted free agent Jack Strand, who was listed as Rush's backup in Week 1, also remains a possibility for Sunday's game. Stefanski confirmed that Strand is "not being ruled out for this game."

The Carolina Panthers lost their season opener with a score of 59-37 to the Chicago Bears.
