Falcons QB Situation Remains Dire as Week 2 Approaches

The Atlanta Falcons are grappling with significant uncertainty at the quarterback position as the team prepares for its home opener against the Carolina Panthers this Sunday. Head coach Kevin Stefanski stated Wednesday that he is not ruling out any of the team's signal-callers from starting.

"We will have a quarterback, yes, for this week," Stefanski said. The available options include Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa, Cooper Rush, and undrafted rookie Jack Strand.

Tagovailoa is currently not practicing due to an oblique injury sustained last week, which also prevented him from starting. Penix Jr. was inactive for the team's Week 1 game. Even if Tagovailoa is medically cleared, his start on Sunday is not guaranteed.

"I’m not trying to be coy," Stefanski commented. "I’m just not ruling anybody out. Continue to work through it. We’re all on the same page between myself, the medical team, Mike. We’ll work through all those things."

Both Penix Jr. and Rush are expected to practice, with Rush continuing to receive treatment for back spasms that flared up on Saturday. Strand also remains an option for the team.

The Falcons signed Tagovailoa as veteran depth while Penix Jr. recovered from an ACL injury. However, Tagovailoa suffered an injury of his own shortly before the regular season began, disrupting the team's initial plans.

Stefanski indicated that the team intends to carefully manage Penix Jr.'s return. "I think you guys talked to Mike and Mike will explain what we’re doing with the progression as he comes back. Like I told you guys, I feel really good about the plan and where we are. I’m not gonna get into specific conversations with our players, but Mike is progressing and doing a good job. But we’ll see how it goes," Stefanski said.

Rush started in Week 1, a 20-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team hopes that a gradual reintegration of Penix Jr. might eventually stabilize their quarterback situation.
