Arsenal has completed the signing of defender Ezri Konsa for £55 million, a move that addresses the team's defensive depth issues exacerbated by injuries to key players William Saliba and Jurrien Timber.

Mikel Arteta's defensive strategy relies heavily on control, and Konsa's profile aligns with the manager's preferences. The 28-year-old is noted for his strength in duels, having won more ground duels than any other Premier League player last season with a 73.1% success rate. He also boasts a high passing accuracy of 95.5%, surpassing Saliba's previous top Arsenal figure of 92.9%.

Konsa's versatility is another asset, with experience at both center-back and right-back. This adaptability is crucial, especially with Timber's long-term absence and Ben White's history of injuries. His ability to play multiple roles in the backline provides Arteta with much-needed flexibility.

This signing aims to prevent a recurrence of past defensive frailties. In the 2024-25 season, injuries to players like Gabriel forced Jakub Kiwior into a makeshift role, highlighting the drop-off in quality and the team's vulnerability, particularly on set-pieces. The collapse of Arsenal's title challenge in 2022-23, partly attributed to Rob Holding's performance in place of the injured Saliba, also underscores the need for reliable cover.

Konsa arrives at Arsenal with encouragement from fellow England internationals, including Bukayo Saka, with whom he has a close relationship. The pair have reportedly worked on individual drills, with Saka crediting Konsa with making him a better player.

While Konsa is available for Arsenal's upcoming match against Aston Villa, his match fitness may be a consideration, as he has not played competitive football since July 18. His integration into Arteta's system, particularly at right-sided center-back which is crucial for build-up play, will be closely watched.

Born in east London, Konsa is a product of the Senrab FC youth system, which has produced numerous professional players. Despite growing up supporting Arsenal's rivals Tottenham, he joins a strong Arsenal defensive unit that includes Saliba, Gabriel, and White, among others.

Konsa's career at Aston Villa, where he joined in 2019, included an initial adjustment period before becoming a key player under managers Dean Smith and Unai Emery. He even took on vice-captaincy duties. His performances in the Champions League, including a notable display against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2024-25 quarter-finals, have also been highlighted.

Although Konsa's transfer may not be the high-profile attacking signing some fans desired, it reinforces Arsenal's defensive strength, which is considered the team's greatest asset.
