Caroline Sunshine, who served as President Donald Trump's communications director during his 2024 presidential campaign, described his recent primetime address to the nation as "boring." Sunshine told CNN that Trump, whom she characterized as "producer in chief," committed a cardinal sin of television by failing to engage his audience.

Trump's nearly 30-minute speech on Thursday reiterated claims about the vulnerability of U.S. elections to hacking. Critics suggested the address was an attempt to preemptively cast doubt on the results of the upcoming midterm elections. During the speech, Trump also announced the declassification of documents he asserted demonstrated Chinese interference in the 2020 presidential election. However, the documents reportedly showed that Russians worked against Joe Biden's campaign and that China desired Trump's defeat.

"Members of the deep state, very, very famous group of people, many cases, in our intelligence agency, worked to actively suppress and downplay information about the extent of China’s sinister election meddling, covering it up from both the president and the American people like nobody thought was possible," Trump stated, referencing the declassified materials.

Sunshine suggested that a more impactful television moment would have been an announcement of victory in Iran and a return of troops, rather than the content of the actual speech. While she acknowledged Trump's release of declassified information regarding foreign interference, Sunshine posited it was a "Hail Mary" to mobilize voters before the midterms, pointing to unfulfilled campaign promises. She added that Trump's political brand thrives when he is perceived as a "political martyr."
