The former partner of surgeon Salil Korambayil, who is facing rape accusations, has spoken out about her experiences of emotional abuse and manipulation, describing his behavior as "gaslighting."
In August 2020, the woman, identified only as Angharad, made a rape accusation to Devon and Cornwall Police regarding Korambayil. However, the complaint did not proceed at that time as she was not in a position to support an investigation, according to the force.
Angharad, who was pregnant at the time, stated that Korambayil dismissed her accusation, calling it a "lie, a malicious allegation." Reflecting on the experience, she expressed disbelief at how she was deceived. "When I look back I realise he was gaslighting me, he was emotionally abusing me, he would make me feel awful for things or control situations and I had no idea it was happening at the time," she said.
Their child was born in November 2020. In April 2021, Korambayil returned home unexpectedly, informing Angharad that he had been suspended, which he attributed to a review of people's information that he claimed was not sinister. Within hours, police arrested him on suspicion of rape.
Angharad stated that she left their home that night with their baby, seeking refuge with family out of fear. She described the emotional toll, recalling a moment where she felt like a child again, seeking comfort from her father.
Angharad fears there may be other victims of Korambayil's alleged actions. Police imagery released includes a handout picture of Korambayil and a mugshot showing him wearing scrubs.
