ESPN sportscaster Stephen A. Smith has publicly criticized President Donald Trump for remarks made about NBA star LeBron James, describing the president's comments as "disgusting" and "trifling."

During his "Straight Shooter" show, Smith stated that the divisiveness and rhetoric from the president are "ridiculous." He expressed that he had held his tongue but felt compelled to speak out after listening to what he called "nonsense."

Trump's comments came in response to a question on Friday in the Oval Office, where he was asked to compare James to basketball icon Michael Jordan. Trump stated he was friends with Jordan and played golf with him, describing him as a "really good guy."

Regarding James, who had recently announced he would be joining the Philadelphia 76ers, Trump said, "I think LeBron is -- maybe he's a racist, but maybe he doesn't like Trump. I don't know. I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way."

Smith questioned the basis for Trump's assertion, asking, "What has LeBron James done to be called a racist, other than not like this man?"

Smith argued that the player's history of criticizing the president should not be interpreted as an indictment against conservatism but rather against Trump himself due to his behavior. He characterized Trump's actions as polarizing rather than galvanizing.

"The way he serves to polarize instead of galvanize," Smith said. "And the question is going to be, when is everybody going to step up and call it for what it is?"

Smith also reflected on his memory of the Republican Party and conservatives valuing standards, decorum, and proper conduct, suggesting these principles have been set aside by supporters of the current president. He believes it is necessary to call out such tendencies, even when exhibited by the president, to foster a better world.
