Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist and commentator Charlie Kirk, released a series of intimate images showing her grieving beside her husband's casket and delivered an emotional public address in which she vowed to carry on his work, days after he was shot and killed at a Utah campus speaking event.
The images, shared with her roughly 3.3 million followers on social media, show Erika Kirk seated next to a lacquered wooden casket, stroking her husband's hand and leaning across the casket in visible distress. In a recorded moment she whispers, "Oh I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. God bless you," her voice breaking as she weeps. In her remarks later the same evening, she called on supporters to sustain the movement her husband helped found and said she would "never let his legacy die."
Erika Kirk's appearance and remarks came hours after law enforcement arrested a suspect in the killing. Tyler James Robinson, 22, of Washington, Utah, was taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm, and obstruction of justice, according to a probable cause statement released by prosecutors. A judge ordered Robinson held without bail.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox told reporters that a family member of Robinson contacted a family friend with information indicating Robinson had "confessed" or otherwise implied involvement in the shooting. Cox said investigators believe Robinson acted alone. Utah state records show Robinson is registered to vote but not affiliated with a political party.
In her roughly 15- to 16-minute online address, Erika Kirk thanked law enforcement and first responders, Turning Point USA employees and conservative leaders who publicly supported her family after the shooting. She thanked President Donald Trump and his family for their support and singled out Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, for their presence when her husband's body was flown back to Arizona aboard Air Force Two. Video and photos from the tarmac showed Vance and his wife alongside Erika Kirk as the casket was handled by uniformed service members.
"Mr. President, my husband loved you. And he knew that you loved him too," she said. "Charlie, I promise I will never let your legacy die, baby. I promise I'll make Turning Point USA the biggest thing that this nation has ever seen."
Erika Kirk spoke of her young children and the practical, private toll of the killing. She recounted telling the couple's three-year-old daughter that her father was "on a work trip with Jesus" after the child asked where her daddy was. She also read a Bible verse and described her faith, saying, "My husband laid down his life for me, for our nation, for our children."
Officials investigating the shooting have characterized Charlie Kirk's death as a political assassination. Law enforcement agencies have not released a motive; prosecutors filed the probable cause statement outlining the charges against the suspect but investigators cautioned that inquiries remain ongoing.
President Trump said on Friday that he plans to attend Kirk's funeral and called it an "obligation," according to comments released by his office. Trump also said he would posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Turning Point USA, the conservative student organization Kirk co-founded, announced plans to continue the campus tour and other activities the organization had scheduled.
Videos and images posted by Erika Kirk showed private moments on the tarmac and at a memorial display, including an image of a photograph of Charlie Kirk on a podium with the words "May Charlie be received into the merciful arms of Jesus, our loving savior." In her address she described her husband as a devoted father and said he had been committed to "reviving the American family," which she said had been one of his top priorities.
Officials said the arrest followed information provided to authorities by people connected to the suspect. The probable cause statement filed in court lists the criminal counts against Robinson, and a judge ordered him held without bail pending further proceedings. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will pursue additional charges or offered further detail about evidence in the case.
Vice President Vance, who has ties to the conservative movement Kirk helped build, accompanied the Kirk family and was photographed comforting Erika Kirk. Turning Point USA and other conservative organizations, along with prominent Republican officials, issued statements offering condolences and pledged to participate in memorial arrangements.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances of the shooting, and authorities have urged anyone with pertinent information to contact law enforcement. Erika Kirk's public statements underscored both personal grief and a political resolve to maintain the organization and the initiatives associated with her late husband.
Funeral arrangements and a timeline for forthcoming hearings in the criminal case were not immediately available. Prosecutors are expected to provide additional details in court filings as the case proceeds.
