Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, shared intimate and emotional images as she mourned beside her husband's casket and delivered a public address vowing to continue his political work, authorities and aides said Saturday. The developments came as Utah police arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of killing Charlie Kirk.
In social media posts and footage shared with her roughly 3.3 million followers, Erika Kirk is shown sitting beside a lacquered wooden casket, stroking her husband's hand and weeping. In one clip she leans across the casket and cries, "Oh I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. God bless you," according to the posts. Hours earlier she spoke to an online audience from her late husband's studio and pledged to keep the organization he co-founded, Turning Point USA, active and growing.
During a roughly 15- to 16-minute address posted Friday evening, Erika Kirk thanked employees of Turning Point USA, law enforcement and first responders, and privately expressed her faith and grief. Wearing a cross necklace, she quoted a Bible passage and described her husband as a "perfect" father who "loved life" and "loved America." She repeatedly vowed, "I promise I will never let your legacy die," and said the group's planned campus tour and his podcast would continue.
She also publicly thanked former President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, for their support. Footage and photographs released around the same time show Vice President Vance and his wife on the tarmac as Kirk's body was returned to Arizona aboard Air Force Two; uniformed service members and Vance helped carry the casket. Erika Kirk appeared alongside the Vances as the casket was transferred.
Law enforcement in Utah arrested Tyler James Robinson, 22, of Washington, Utah, on suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm and obstruction of justice, according to a probable cause statement made public Friday. A judge ordered Robinson held without bail. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said a family member of the suspect provided information to a family friend indicating Robinson had "confessed" or implied involvement; Cox said authorities believe the suspect acted alone.
Authorities are treating Kirk's death as a political assassination, according to statements from conservative allies and media accounts. Law enforcement agencies have described the case as under active investigation, and officials have released limited public information as they work to develop additional evidence and determine motive.
Erika Kirk described private family moments during her remarks, saying their three-year-old daughter asked, "Where's daddy?" and that she told the child he was on "a business trip with Jesus." She repeatedly paused to collect herself and wipe away tears while addressing employees, supporters and the wider audience that followed Turning Point USA and her husband's podcast.
President Trump, in a statement reported Friday, said he plans to attend Kirk's funeral and intends to posthumously award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Turning Point USA, founded by Charlie Kirk, built a national profile with campus tours, social media outreach and a podcast that regularly featured conservative commentary. Charlie Kirk had been scheduled to appear at a Utah Valley University speaking event shortly before he was shot, according to accounts of his activities earlier in the week.
Funeral arrangements for Charlie Kirk were being finalized as family, friends and allies continued to publicly mourn and memorialize him. Erika Kirk said she would continue the organization's work and cast the killing as an attack on a message of "patriotism, faith and God's merciful love," saying she would not allow the movement her husband built to falter.
Authorities urged anyone with information related to the investigation to contact law enforcement. Further details about the circumstances of the shooting and a possible motive have not been released publicly by investigators.
