An inmate who shared time with Jeffrey Epstein on suicide watch at a New York jail believes the financier died by suicide, according to a BBC Panorama documentary. William "Dollar Bill" Mersey, who served as an "inmate companion" at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Manhattan, said he observed Epstein’s declining mood and behavior in the period leading up to his death in August 2019.

Mersey stated he spent at least 15 to 20 hours conversing with Epstein, discussing his own experiences with tax fraud related to an escort advertising agency. He described witnessing Epstein sitting on the floor of his cell, eating chicken from a container between his legs, appearing "down and out." When asked about his posture, Epstein reportedly replied, "Oh, it's just easier this way."

At one point, Epstein offered Mersey money, asking if he needed any funds. Mersey interpreted this offer as a potential farewell, suggesting Epstein was signaling his intention to die by suicide at the earliest opportunity. Mersey did not receive any money.

As an inmate companion, Mersey underwent four hours of training to observe inmates on suicide watch. This role provided him with significant direct contact with Epstein, beyond that of prison staff and lawyers.

Epstein was found dead in his MCC cell while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. The New York City medical examiner officially ruled his death a suicide. However, various theories questioning foul play have circulated since his death.

Ghislaine Maxwell, an accomplice of Epstein, is currently serving a 20-year sentence for her role in luring young girls for Epstein. The fallout from Epstein's activities has also impacted Prince Andrew, who has been accused of sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre, claims the prince denies. Andrew was stripped of his royal titles and forced to leave his royal residence following revelations of his ties to Epstein.
