Elon Musk issued a stark warning on Friday, baselessly asserting that American democracy faces an "end" if Democrats secure control of the House and Senate and a Democratic president is elected in 2028. This statement marks a final, fear-laden push for Republican candidates in the upcoming midterms, advocating for President Donald Trump and the GOP.
"This would result in America becoming a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word," Musk posted on X. "All that is needed to ensure this doesn’t happen is 51 Republican senators in 2029. That is why you should vote for Republican senators this election."
Musk has emerged as a significant donor in the midterm elections, reportedly spending over $446 million to support Republican congressional majorities. He argued that a Democratic victory would undermine democracy.
His stated concerns include Democrats potentially admitting Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., as U.S. states, expanding the Supreme Court, and "legalizing everyone living in America illegally" to bolster their voter base.
"It would be game over for America," Musk wrote in a separate post.
This is not the first time Musk has linked electoral outcomes to the survival of democracy. He previously claimed ahead of the 2024 election that U.S. democracy would end if Trump did not win, and he reportedly spent more than $250 million to aid Trump's reelection campaign.
Musk's past involvement with the Trump administration included a role in the "Department of Government Efficiency," which aimed to reduce public spending. However, his companies receive billions in federal contracts, and he has been accused of seeking to weaken regulatory agencies that investigate his businesses.
Amidst dire approval ratings for the current president, compounded by an affordability crisis and the financial impact of the war in Iran, some Republican figures are distancing themselves from party leadership. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who was ousted from his position, criticized the Republican Party's actions.
"What’s coming was avoidable, but Republicans in Congress let Trump start a war, increase spending, arm a genocide, betray MAHA, and cover up for Epstein’s coconspirators," Massie posted on X, in response to Musk. "I was ousted with over $30 million of foreign lobby money for refusing to go along, and here we are."
