Elon Musk has vowed to retaliate against what he described as "far-left activists," specifically mentioning a former videographer who worked for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's campaign and had previously called Musk a "valid military target."
"If they come after me, I will come after them and finish the job," Musk wrote on the social media platform X on Monday. His statement was in response to a post highlighting an investigation by The Free Press into Eric Hovagim, who volunteered to film and edit videos for Mamdani's 2025 Democratic mayoral primary campaign.
Hovagim, a 28-year-old independent videographer and political content creator, reportedly made controversial statements on X, including a March post calling Musk a "valid military target" after a video showed what appeared to be Iraqi locals recovering a downed U.S. drone allegedly bearing Starlink markings, a service provided by Musk's company.
The Free Press profile also noted Hovagim's other comments, such as alleging that the U.S. and Israel are run by "Zionist pedophiles" and dismissing reports of China's repression of Uyghurs as CIA propaganda. Hovagim reportedly likened America to the "Fourth Reich."
Musk's statement on X was shared by investor Joe Lonsdale, who commented that "many on the far left are this radical" and questioned how to break through "insulated media bubbles."
Hovagim told the Daily Caller News Foundation in November that he volunteered for Mamdani's campaign but received no payment. He stated his involvement was limited to filming and editing three promotional videos before the primary.
Mamdani's campaign did not dispute Hovagim's account. Hovagim, originally from Arizona, attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied industrial engineering. He later co-founded an online sports betting startup before shifting his focus to political commentary.
His work has included political videos and documentaries. According to The Free Press, Hovagim has defended the Chinese Communist Party's policies in Xinjiang. He also produced videos praising Mamdani's campaign strategy and was credited as a producer on a documentary about Cuba by left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, who has previously made controversial remarks about the U.S.
The Post has sought comment from Hovagim, Mamdani, and Piker.
