Elliot Page and girlfriend Julia Shiplett appeared together at the New York premiere of Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, "The Odyssey," on Tuesday. The couple posed for photos on the red carpet at AMC Lincoln Square.
Page, who publicly came out as transgender in 2020, is part of the film's cast. He plays the Greek soldier Sinon in the adaptation of Homer's epic. This marks a reunion with Nolan, with whom Page previously worked on the 2010 film "Inception."
Shiplett, an actress known for "Overcompensating," wore a dark brown dress for the event. Page opted for a classic black suit with a striped shirt. The couple, who confirmed their relationship in June 2025 via an Instagram post, made their red carpet debut later that year at a Gucci short film premiere in Milan Fashion Week. Their appearance at "The Odyssey" premiere comes after Page attended the film's London debut the previous week, where Shiplett shared her support on Instagram.
Casting Controversy
"The Odyssey" has faced public backlash regarding its casting choices ahead of its July 17 release. Elon Musk, owner of X, publicly opposed the casting of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy, a role famously described as having "a face launched a thousand ships." Nyong'o, an Oscar winner for "12 Years a Slave," is also set to portray Clytemnestra in the film.
Criticism also arose from figures like commentator Matt Walsh, who questioned Nyong'o's casting based on traditional beauty standards and suggested Nolan felt compelled to cast her to avoid accusations of racism. Musk's comment of "True" in response to Walsh's post drew pushback from other celebrities.
Nyong'o also recently faced criticism for her response to a question about what she would ask the ancient Greek poet Homer, where she questioned the focus on female characters. Her remarks were met with derision on social media.
False rumors circulated online that Page would portray the warrior Achilles, which also drew criticism from Musk, who called the potential casting choice "one of the dumbest and twisted things I've ever heard." Following the confirmation of Page's actual role, Musk reposted a comment that questioned Page's masculinity.
Nolan, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, described working with Page again as "thrilling" and stated that Page brings something special to his role as Sinon, embodying elements of Odysseus's actions and the tragedy of war.
The director has defended other casting decisions, such as that of rapper Travis Scott, explaining in May that he cast Scott to acknowledge the story's origins in oral poetry, analogous to rap.
"The Odyssey" also features Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron. The online criticism has become so intense that the official X account for Nolan's "Odyssey" has restricted comments on its posts.
