Haji Ismail Ahmed Leli, 80, and Hajiyani Fatima Ismail Leli, 78, were found dead by their carers on Monday morning at their terraced home on Hardman Street. A murder investigation has been launched by Lancashire Police, and a man in his 40s was taken into custody on suspicion of murder. Authorities stated that an increased police presence would remain in the area to conduct inquiries and offer reassurance to the community. Police are currently working to establish the motive for the incident but do not believe there is a wider threat to the public.

The couple's family released a statement describing them as "inseparable" and the "very heart" of their family. They had been married for over 60 years and were devoted to one another. The family expressed their heartbreak and gratitude to the police for their diligence and compassion, as well as to local councilors, the wider community, and the Masjide Quwwatal Islam mosque for their support. They requested privacy during their time of grief.

Neighbors reported waking up to a significant police presence on Monday morning, with detectives conducting door-to-door inquiries. One resident noted that the street, usually quiet, had become a crime scene. The couple, who lived in the property, were described by another neighbor as elderly, very private, and members of a nearby mosque.
