Eight men have been charged with more than 30 offenses related to historical child sexual exploitation in south Wales. The alleged abuse occurred between 1985 and 1996, spanning over a decade.
The suspects, aged between 54 and 75, face a total of 34 charges, including 17 counts of rape. The charges stem from an investigation by Gwent Police known as Operation Oak, initiated after several women reported experiencing sexual abuse as children. The alleged offenses involved eight victims who were minors at the time.
Authorities have arrested the men in various locations, including Newport, Swansea, London, Birmingham, Lancashire, Edinburgh, and the Argyll and Bute area of Scotland. They are scheduled to appear before Newport Magistrates' Court on July 24.
Detective Chief Superintendent Andrew Tuck of Gwent Police emphasized the importance of supporting victims throughout the complex and long-running investigation into group-based child sexual exploitation. He urged anyone who has suffered abuse or suspects someone may be a victim to come forward, assuring them that reports will be taken seriously and investigated, with support services made available.
Jenny Hopkins, chief crown prosecutor for Wales, stated that prosecutors have determined there is sufficient evidence to proceed with court proceedings in the public interest. She reminded the public that criminal proceedings are active and that the defendants are entitled to a fair trial, stressing the importance of avoiding any online reporting or commentary that could prejudice the case.
The men charged include Shafaq Mohammad, 58, facing multiple counts of rape and charges related to prostitution; Syed Mohammad Ashan Taqvi, 65, with three counts of rape; Mohammad Sheikh Abdul Hannan, 54, facing rape, indecent assault, and conspiracy to rape charges; Kevin Lawrence, 54, charged with conspiracy to rape and causing prostitution; Sheikh Mohammed Tahir Ullah, 73, with rape charges; Aminur Rahman Chowdhury, 58, charged with rape; Shakeel Babur, 58, facing indecent assault charges; and Murad Ali, 57, with rape charges.
