Edinburgh's public transportation system is experiencing ongoing disruption as buses are diverted from Princes Street following a significant fire at the former Debenhams department store. The duration of these diversions remains indefinite, posing a "significant challenge" to bus operators and commuters, according to Willie Hamilton, Lothian Buses chief operating officer.
Princes Street is a central hub for Edinburgh's public transport, and its closure has a considerable impact on services. Hamilton stated that discussions regarding the situation are continuous and advised travelers to check for updates frequently, as the situation is fluid and can change rapidly. The ongoing closures are also influencing decisions about planned road closures for the upcoming festival season, including the usual August closure of George Street which permits venues to expand onto the road.
"Once we've got a date for length of time for this, that will determine whether the upcoming closures, for example of George Street for the festival, has to be a consideration or not," Hamilton said. The fire, which occurred last week, has necessitated the rerouting of bus services, impacting daily commutes and city access.
The fire damaged the former Debenhams building on Princes Street, a location critical to the city's transport network. While the exact timeline for resolving the disruptions is not yet determined, the indefinite nature of the closures highlights the severity of the impact on Edinburgh's infrastructure and daily operations.
