Promoter Eddie Hearn has claimed that 21-year-old rugby player Henry Pollock is a "seven-figure player" deserving of a £1 million annual salary from his club, Northampton Saints. Hearn, who signed Pollock to his Matchroom Talent Agency in March, believes Pollock's on-field talent and commercial potential warrant such a figure, stating his value is set to "skyrocket."

Pollock currently earns approximately £150,000 from Northampton, with a similar amount from his status as an Enhanced Elite Playing Squad (EEPS) member with England. However, the financial climate of English rugby makes Hearn's valuation appear unrealistic to many within the sport. PREM Rugby clubs operate with a total squad spend limit of £6.4 million, with the potential for one "marquee" player's salary to fall outside this cap. Northampton, known for financial prudence, does not typically spend near the maximum salary cap.

Even top French clubs, known for their financial strength, might hesitate at such a sum, which would also necessitate Pollock foregoing his international career by playing overseas. For context, Antoine Dupont, considered the world's top player, reportedly earns £1.2 million annually at Toulouse. While former England stars like Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje earned close to £1 million at Saracens, this was before the RFU began subsidizing some player salaries through EEPS contracts to alleviate club financial burdens.

Hearn's comparison of rugby salaries to those in boxing, where his agency also operates, has been dismissed as apples and oranges, highlighting the significant disparity in wealth between the sports. Rugby still lags considerably behind boxing and football in terms of overall revenue and player earnings.

Despite the financial questions, Pollock's rapid rise from academy player to England international and British & Irish Lion is acknowledged as exceptional for his age. He is seen as a vital asset for the growth of English rugby. Pollock has been a breath of fresh air to English rugby. He is supremely talented and although not universally popular, he is exactly the sort of player the sport needs to grow

Negotiations over Pollock's future contract are complicated by the fact that his former representative, Matt Hart of Stellar Group, still manages his playing contracts, even though Hearn and Hart are working collaboratively. Hearn's public statements have introduced a new dynamic into these discussions.

The likely outcome is a compromise, with Pollock receiving a salary increase, albeit one that falls short of Hearn's £1 million demand. It is anticipated that Pollock could eventually approach a seven-figure income through a combination of his club and national contracts, alongside additional commercial endorsements. Northampton do not spend close to the PREM Rugby salary cap, which makes their recent titles in 2024 and 2026 all the more impressive There is no doubt that Pollock’s rapid ascent to a regular England international and British & Irish Lion is unusual for one so young. He is certainly deserving of an increase
