Ed Sheeran has broken his silence regarding Macklemore's removal from his tour following the rapper's 'Free Palestine' speech. Sheeran clarified that his concerts are intended as spaces of joy and unity, not political platforms.

Macklemore was scheduled to perform as an opening act for Sheeran's LOOP tour dates in New Jersey on September 4 and 5. During his sets, Macklemore chanted "Free Palestine," advocated for equal treatment for all humans, and displayed images of devastation in Gaza. He also performed his protest song "Hind's Hall."

The rapper's actions led to venue owners communicating that they would cancel shows if he continued his political statements. Sheeran stated that Macklemore's removal from the tour was a decision made by the promoter, not by him, and that Macklemore's contract was with the promoter.

"I was informed that this stance was based on how Macklemore conveyed part of his message during his performance, rather than on everything that was said," Sheeran explained in a statement. "I spoke with the venues at length all week to try and build a bridge."

Sheeran emphasized his commitment to not disappointing fans who had made plans and to supporting his touring crew and other musicians. He reiterated that his shows are designed for "unity, joy, escapism, love, and a place for everyone to feel welcome."

"I have always used my platform and music to bring people from all backgrounds and cultures together and this won't ever change," Sheeran wrote. "Those who have been to one of my shows will know that they are about unity, joy, escapism, love, and a place for everyone to feel welcome."

Sheeran also stated that while he has personal views on the conflict, he chooses not to use his professional platform for political statements due to his audience, which includes young people. He believes in maintaining diplomacy and keeping conversations open, suggesting that "shouting the loudest" does not lead to change.

Macklemore has a history of supporting Palestinian rights and has previously criticized Israel's actions in Gaza and the West Bank. Following his performances, a petition circulated calling for his removal from Sheeran's tour, with some accusing him of anti-Semitic rhetoric. The Israeli-American Council was reportedly behind the petition.

Pink also commented on the situation, reposting a statement from StopAntisemitism that criticized Macklemore's speech as "anti-Israel propaganda" and accused him of turning the event into a "political nightmare."

Macklemore appeared to respond to the controversy by posting a clip of his speech, captioned: "Wanting all humans to be treated equal should never be controversial."
