Actor Shane Richie has been charged with drink-driving following an incident at a petrol station in Harlow, Essex, on July 29. The 62-year-old EastEnders star was seen leaving the soap's set in north London last week, continuing work while awaiting his court date.
Police were called to a Tesco petrol station after Richie was reportedly challenged by staff for vaping on the premises. Footage from the incident shows Richie engaging with staff, at one point stating, "It's not smoking." When informed he was being filmed, he reportedly said, "This is not a vape." The petrol station manager called the police, describing Richie's behavior as aggressive. Richie was later arrested and subsequently charged with drink-driving.
While it is a criminal offense to smoke a cigarette at a petrol station due to fire risks, vaping is not specifically illegal but is prohibited by most petrol station companies due to similar safety concerns. Richie is scheduled to appear in court next month.
Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Richie was seen driving home from filming EastEnders, as individuals charged with drink-driving are legally permitted to continue driving until convicted. Sources close to the actor have expressed concern, suggesting he may be struggling with his workload, which includes his role as Alfie Moon on the BBC soap and preparations for a tour in September. One source told The Sun that those close to Richie believe he could be "spiralling" and that his position on the show could be at risk, with potential suspension by BBC bosses being a possibility.
