The first season of ‘Dutton Ranch’ concluded with a violent and unexpected death in its penultimate episode, followed by a kidnapping that leaves a key character's fate uncertain. The dramatic finale tied up several plot threads while introducing new dangers for the central characters.
A Fatal Confrontation
The season's ninth episode saw simmering tensions between the Duttons and the Jackson family boil over. Following Beulah Jackson's announcement of her biological son, Rob-Will (Jai Courtney), as her successor to the 10-Petal Ranch, conflict escalated. Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) were already at odds with the Jacksons over their discovery of an illegal cattle operation linked to Mexico.
Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba), the adopted son of Beulah, had sought help from his father, Mariano (Raoul Max Trujillo). Mariano, upon learning that Beulah had chosen Rob-Will and brought in outsiders like Beth and Rip, who had uncovered the family's drug dealing operation, confronted Beulah. He ordered her to reinstate Joaquin as successor and send Beth and Rip away, threatening to take action himself.
Later, Mariano instructed Kino, another individual involved with the Jacksons, to kill his own brother, Rob-Will. The episode depicted Rob-Will sharing a tender moment with his daughter, Oreana, before answering the doorbell. A gunshot was heard, and Oreana found him dead. While Kino was seen fleeing the scene and later distraught, the narrative strongly implies he was the one who carried out the order to kill his brother.
Carter's Abduction
Adding to the season's dramatic conclusion, the fate of Carter, a young character under Beth and Rip's care, was left in peril. Earlier in the episode, Mariano had sent men to target the Duttons. While Rip, Azul, Zach, and Everett fended off these attackers, Beth was actively trying to locate Carter.
As the finale neared its end, Beth received a call from Mariano, who revealed he had Carter. The episode showed Mariano's men abducting Carter from Dwight's house, placing him in the trunk of a car. Beth, upon learning of Carter's capture, declared to Rip that they would confront Mariano, stating, "Then they’re gonna fucking get us."
The season finale left viewers with the unresolved threat to Carter and the ongoing animosity between the families, reinforcing Beth's earlier sentiment that "peace will have to wait."
