Shanise Hussain, 27, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after losing control of her Audi and striking two pedestrians, resulting in the death of one. The incident occurred on July 21, 2024, on Great Hampton Street in Birmingham.
Hussain was driving her Audi A3 at speeds of 48 mph in a 30 mph zone when she attempted to swerve around another vehicle. This maneuver caused her to lose control, mount the wrong side of the road, and collide with a central reservation before hitting the two passers-by. One of the pedestrians, identified as Maurice Middleton, 68, died at the scene. The second pedestrian sustained minor head and hand injuries. A parked vehicle also sustained damage.
Mobilizing to the scene, Hussain remained to cooperate with West Midlands Police's investigation. She was subsequently charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court, Hussain was found guilty of the offense. In addition to her prison sentence, she received a disqualification from driving for eight years and three months. The court heard emotional tributes from Mr. Middleton's family, who described him as "the glue that held us all together" and noted the significant void left by his death.
Detective Sergeant Richard Evans of West Midlands Police expressed that the force's thoughts were "first and foremost with the victims' family." He used the incident to remind all road users of the profound responsibility associated with driving and how momentary decisions can lead to life-altering consequences for many individuals.
