A driver died early Friday morning after their car plummeted approximately 50 feet from an overpass in downtown Los Angeles, the California Post reported. The vehicle was traveling northbound on Upper Grand Avenue around 2:30 a.m. when it veered off the roadway, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The car fell to Lower Grand Avenue, where it overturned. Authorities pronounced the driver, a Black male in his 30s, dead at the scene. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and no other cars were involved in the incident.
Video footage from the scene showed the car, identified as a black sedan, significantly damaged and flipped onto its hood. Emergency services, including the Los Angeles Fire Department, responded to the crash site. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and it is unknown if the driver was impaired.
A witness described hearing a loud noise as the car fell. "I was at the ATM and I heard something go ‘boom,’ and I said that sounds like a car that fell down here,” the witness stated, indicating the street below. "And look, it was a car that fell down here. That’s crazy."
The witness also noted she had never before seen a car fall from the overpass.
