A police officer in pursuit of a suspect unexpectedly received a lift from a civilian driver. Footage captured the moment a woman driving her car, with a passenger filming, observed the officer sprinting alongside their vehicle in pursuit of an individual described as wearing shorts and a rucksack.
As the suspect moved ahead of the officer, the driver remarked on the chase, noting the suspect's apparent aim for a train station. The suspect crossed a busy road, narrowly avoiding collisions with oncoming vehicles, while the officer remained behind. The situation changed at a red light when the officer was seen entering the back seat of the civilian car. He then instructed the driver to "stop here" before exiting the vehicle to resume the chase on foot.
The incident occurred near a large warehouse, where another police car was visible, and an additional officer was seen running to assist the original officer. Bystanders captured the unusual event, with one expressing surprise, stating, "I didn't know they were allowed to do that."
The passenger filming the incident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that they were driving home when they witnessed the chase. They recounted that the officer entered their vehicle as they passed by and instructed them to follow the suspect. The driver initially believed the officer was going to ask them to stop filming but instead was asked to participate in the pursuit until the officer signaled them to stop.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has been contacted for comment regarding the incident.
