Drake Bell, known for his role in the Nickelodeon series "Drake & Josh," is actively working to rebuild his career and reputation at age 40. This effort comes after a series of personal scandals and public difficulties that have significantly impacted his public image. Bell recently shared insights into his past, revealing that he was sexually abused by vocal instructor Brian Peck at age 15. This disclosure, made in 2024, came after his participation in the docuseries "Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV."
Bell has stated that his music has been a crucial outlet for processing his childhood trauma and telling his story. He is currently on his "I LOVE YOU" tour across the United States. "I tell my story through my art, and the documentary is one way of seeing my story," Bell told The Hollywood Reporter. "But if you really want to know what’s going on in my mind, my heart and my thoughts, to get down to the nitty gritty, you should check out my record and what I’m doing artistically, because that’s a much more pure reflection of what’s gone on in my life and my experiences."
In addition to his music, Bell participated in "The Masked Singer Mexico" in 2024. He has also been working on an autobiography to share his experiences with fans. Bell has previously released several studio albums and, in 2020, announced plans to relocate to Mexico and release a Spanish-language album, though he did release an album titled "Sesiones en Casa" in 2020.
Bell's public life has been marked by a number of challenges. These include two driving under the influence (DUI) arrests, in 2009 and 2015. Following the 2015 arrest, he pleaded guilty and received a sentence of four days in jail and four years of probation. He also faced accusations of physical and verbal abuse from two ex-girlfriends. In August 2020, ex-girlfriend Melissa Lingafelt accused Bell of abuse, which he denied at the time, calling the allegations "offensive and defamatory."
Further difficulties arose in December 2022 when Bell was photographed appearing to inhale from balloons while his young son was in the back seat of his car. Following this incident, news reports indicated that Bell and his then-wife, Janet Von Schmeling, had separated, and that Bell had entered a treatment program. In April 2023, authorities briefly sought information on Bell's whereabouts after he was reported missing, later confirming they had made contact and he was safe. Call logs obtained by TMZ suggested the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute and included alleged threats of self-harm.
Von Schmeling filed for divorce in 2023, citing separation since September 2022 and seeking primary custody of their son. Bell publicly expressed distress, stating he learned of the divorce filing through TMZ. He also addressed online criticism, attributing some of it to his struggles with mental health.
In 2021, Bell pleaded guilty to "attempted endangering children and disseminating matter harmful to juveniles." This charge stemmed from an accusation by a woman who claimed Bell had groomed her and engaged in sexual assault between 2013 and 2015, when she was a minor. Bell stated he took a plea deal to end the scandal quickly, maintaining he was unaware of the accuser's age and denying specific allegations.
Despite these past events, Bell is focused on his present and future. He has purchased property in Celebration, Florida, to be closer to his son, Jeremy, and maintain a routine with him when not on tour. "I carve out tons of time to be home in Florida with my son," Bell said. "I have a place out there so I do get to wake up in the morning and get him ready for school and have routine with him."
Bell, who marked his 40th birthday recently, has expressed a desire for his fans to understand his true story, with music and his upcoming autobiography serving as key vehicles for this narrative. "In my life, throughout my career and in the public eye, I’ve been lumped in with another young actor that due to an indulgent lifestyle and getting too much at once, at too young an age, made all of the missteps and mistakes that commonly come along with that upbringing," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "But now the curtain is being pulled back and it’s being revealed that there was a lot more darkness and trauma and turmoil that I was dealing with on the inside, and because of the circumstances I was never able to reveal."
