The California Highway Patrol is investigating the death of Javier Becerril, 42, of Hollister, as a homicide after his body was discovered last Thursday in the trunk of a Tesla abandoned on the side of Highway 152 near the San Luis Reservoir. Investigators classified the death as suspicious, leading to the homicide investigation.

Becerril had been reported missing by his family prior to the discovery. Detectives are currently analyzing the Tesla's onboard computer system for data or video that might help identify those responsible for his death. The family is cooperating with authorities as the investigation continues.

Fellow DoorDash drivers have established a small memorial for Becerril in the parking lot of a Safeway in Hollister, a location where he reportedly often picked up deliveries. The family remembered Becerril as a "father, devoted son, caring brother, and cherished cousin" with a "kind heart, a generous spirit, and was always willing to help those he loved." A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to assist with funeral and memorial expenses and to support his children.
