Donovan Dent, who previously played for UCLA and the University of New Mexico, is seeking a fifth year of NCAA eligibility after announcing his retirement from basketball in May. The application for an additional year could allow him to return for the 2026-27 season.
Dent initially stated his intention to step away from professional basketball, opting instead to return to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to work with young players. He was hosting a youth basketball camp in New Mexico, indicating a continued commitment to community involvement. However, a potential change in NCAA rules prompted him and those around him to explore the possibility of one more season.
Coaches and family members encouraged Dent to pursue the additional year of eligibility, framing it as an opportunity. The ruling on his eligibility request is pending, and the location of his potential return has not yet been determined.
During his single season with UCLA, Dent was a significant contributor, averaging 13.3 points and 7.6 assists per game. He started 34 games and was instrumental in leading the Bruins to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. UCLA currently has roster flexibility, with 12 players listed against the 15-player limit, but a decision would need to be made regarding how Dent's potential return fits into coach Mick Cronin's roster plans.
Dent could also consider returning to New Mexico, where his college career began and where he was named the 2025 Mountain West Player of the Year. The outcome of his eligibility review will ultimately determine if his retirement was a brief pause or a final conclusion to his college playing days.
