Ousted CNN anchor Don Lemon has publicly criticized Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's reported decision to move back to the United Kingdom with their children. Lemon shared his reactions on Instagram, expressing skepticism about the couple's plans after they relocated to the United States in 2020.
"After all that consternation, after all that stuff y'all put us through, the Oprah interview, all that," Lemon said, referencing the Sussexes' televised interview with Oprah Winfrey where they made controversial claims about the royal family. He particularly alluded to their discussion about a royal family member's alleged concerns over the skin tone of their unborn child.
Lemon, who has previously indicated interest in a presidential run, read from a New York Times article detailing the alleged move. "Harry and Meghan will move back to Britain," he stated, before questioning the decision. "Come on, make up y'all's mind. Good luck. Whatever."
He speculated about the potential for drama upon their return, wondering about the reaction from Catherine, the Princess of Wales. "I wanna know what Kate's gonna say. Is it gonna be kissy kissy huggy hug or shady mcshade? The latter, I'm sure," Lemon remarked.
The news of the Sussexes' potential return to the UK comes after they stepped back from royal duties in 2019. They currently reside in Montecito, California, with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Reports suggest the family intends to stay in the UK for an extended period while maintaining their California residence and a property in Portugal. Meghan is expected to continue managing her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from the UK.
While Lemon expressed his views, some Instagram users defended the Sussexes, citing the importance of family connections and the children knowing their relatives. Others were critical, questioning the reasons behind their initial departure from royal life and suggesting financial motives or unmet celebrity aspirations.
King Charles III was reportedly informed of the move and, according to sources, welcomes the opportunity to see his son and grandchildren. However, it has been emphasized that the couple's status as private citizens and non-working royals will remain unchanged, consistent with their previous wishes. Prince William and Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales, have also been made aware of the reported relocation.
